Can I really use Railroad Ops for free?
Yes. The Free tier is free forever — no credit card required. You get one layout with up to 50 total items, waybill generation, operating sessions, and maintenance tracking.
What counts as an item?
Locations, locomotives, freight cars, passenger cars, MOW equipment, cabooses, and trains all count toward your 50-item total. Waybills, industries, and yard tracks don't count.
What happens when I hit the free tier limit?
You'll see a notice when you approach the cap. Nothing gets deleted — you just can't add new items until you upgrade or remove existing ones.
How do crew seats work?
Pro includes 1 crew member. Need more? Each additional crew seat is $5/month. You can have up to 10 total crew members (1 included + up to 9 purchased).
Is there a maximum number of crew members?
Yes — 10 total (1 included with Pro plus up to 9 purchased seats). If you need more, contact support.
Can I switch plans anytime?
Absolutely. Upgrade, downgrade, or cancel at any time. No annual contracts, no lock-in. If you downgrade and exceed the lower tier's limits, you keep your data but can't add new items.
Do crew members need their own accounts?
Yes. Each crew member signs up with their own email. The layout owner invites them via email or shareable link, and they get role-based access (Dispatcher, Yardmaster, Conductor, or a custom role).

Your data lives on Neon Postgres with automatic backups. All traffic is encrypted in transit. We never share or sell your data.
